Job Description:

WMSI is seeking caring, enthusiastic problem-solvers to join our team!  The Substitute STEAM Program Instructor will facilitate educational STEAM programs for elementary and middle school students by stepping in on an as-needed basis to lead or assist with lessons, activities, or workshops. This position does not carry a fixed schedule; instead, the instructor will be contacted with as much advance notice as possible to help with program coverage. This might include last-minute absences, special events, or seasonal surges in programming.

This position involves driving a personal vehicle to multiple locations within 1.5 hours of WMSI’s base in Littleton, NH (many of our programs are off-site at North Country and Northeast Kingdom schools). Candidates should be comfortable with a flexible, non-routine schedule and able to adapt quickly to different classrooms, age groups, or lesson plans with limited preparation time.

This role is ideal for someone seeking flexible, occasional work rather than a set weekly schedule.

Salary Range: $17-$25/hr, commensurate with experience

Duties Will Include:

• Responding promptly to shift/coverage requests via phone/text and communicate availability on a regular (weekly or monthly) basis

• Lead pre-planned STEAM lessons or activities for elementary and middle school students, often with minimal notice

• Review curriculum and program materials in advance of a shift to prepare for teaching on short notice

• Maintain a safe, positive, and engaging environment when covering unfamiliar groups or classrooms

• Organize and maintain program-related resources and equipment as needed

• Occasionally assist with or develop lesson curriculum

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• At least 1-3 years of experience working with youth — essential

• Ability to support and empower students in the creative problem-solving process — essential

• Ability to independently establish and maintain a positive classroom environment — essential

• Strong communication and organizational skills, with both children and team members — essential

• Prior experience and/or interest in science, technology, engineering, art, and math — a plus

• Completion of a post-secondary degree or equivalent experience — preferred

• Ability to adapt quickly to different classrooms, age groups, locations, or lesson content on short notice

• Self-directed and motivated, with strong time management and reliability

• Comfortable with a flexible schedule and short-notice availability

• A flexible team player, open to feedback and able to adapt

• Valid driver's license and reliable, insured personal vehicle to travel to program sites

• Comfortable driving safely in variable weather conditions

Schedule:

• Ideal start date in September 2026

• Hours are non-guaranteed and vary based on program needs. Instructors are contacted on a call-in basis to cover programs, and may accept or decline shifts depending on availability

• Programs take place during the school day and/or after-school timeframe

• Occasional evening and/or weekend programs possible

Physical Exertion Environmental Conditions:

• Required to sit for extended periods of time, stand frequently, use fine motor skills to operate equipment, and lift and/or move 40 pounds or less.
